BIG LIE NO. 5 “CHINA IS NOT OUR COMPETITOR”

“China is going to eat our lunch? Come on, man,” said Joe Biden just after announcing his bid for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination. “They can’t figure out how they’re going to deal with the corruption that exists within the system,” Biden said of China. “I mean, you know, they’re not bad folks, folks. But guess what? They’re not competition for us.” The Chinese may not know how to deal with their own corruption, but they sure know how to use corrupt politicians in the U. S. Government and the leaders of major corporations such as the mainstream media, social media or Big Tech, and entertainment industry liberals including the NBA.

In 1992, my fledgling structural engineering company joined the National Federation of Independent Businesses, the NFIB. They sent out a questionnaire soliciting the opinions on the strategic business outlook including future problems ahead. I responded, “The biggest nemesis for American business is China.”

The Clinton administration had started the transfer of our technology to China in exchange for cash contributions to the Clinton political war chest. Then Senator Biden backed Clinton's deal of letting China into the WTO. The premise was “free-trade.” At that time, Biden had backed free trade over his three decades in Congress, during a period when increasing globalization was viewed as a path to prosperity by Washington elitists. He also supported the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). As Obama’s vice president, he was a vocal proponent of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the Obama administration's meager attempt to counter China's growing influence in Asia that Biden had actually championed. But China was admitted into the World Trade Organization as a developing country and this gained them a real advantage over the United States and the European Union.

My engineering practice thrived until the Democrat takeover of Congress in 2006 and then the economy went into a tailspin. We took our eyes off of the China threat to save the economy and China took advantage of our misplaced focus. So, this is one more of the many errors in foreign policy made by Joe Biden. In his memoir, former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said, “I think he has been wrong on nearly every major foreign policy and national security issue over the past four decades.” I agree. China is our biggest competitor.

According to David Goldberg “China poses a formidable strategic challenge to America, but we should keep in mind that it is in large part motivated by insecurity and fear: America has inherent strengths that China does not. And the greatest danger to America is not a lack of strength, but complacency. China is a phenomenon unlike anything in economic history . . . In an incredibly short period of time, this formerly backward country has lifted itself into the very first rank of world economies.” (Goldman, 2018)

The Chinese economy is already bigger than that of the United States. Our economy is still bigger when measured in dollars but the Chinese are gaining on us.
